‘Fringes’ (vol. 1) is the pilot project of Toimoi series of collective exhibitions that showcase selections from Toimoi collection 2007: a plethora of works by around 30 artists listed in Toimoi’s stockroom.
The artists, all from three cities, Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta and aged ranging from 21 to 37, come from different backrounds, experiences and artistic resume. Many of them already built their career professionally as creative workers in various fields, from graphic design, indie music, media, fashion and interior/product design, others have been recognized locally and internationally in the contemporary art scene or actively working with their independent artists’ initiatives and communities, and a few who are still studying in art academies.
‘Fringes’ displays the eclectic differences between these artists and their choices of medium : from spray paint, computer generated, silk-screened, stenciled, bastardized objects, custom character design, fashion and comic-inspired and more. Yet, the works reflect their common ground: the contemporary generation’s spontaneous, colourful and at times guirky attitude of urbanism along with its subcultures that ground their upbringin.
The name of this exhibition is taken from ‘fringe’, a term that can mean ‘edge’ or ‘margin’ and often used in certain international art festivals to suggest ‘alternative-ness’, offbeat or non-mainstream art practices. ‘Fringes’ at Toimoi is also meant as a kind of small art fair in its own right, which celebrates the dynamics of young Indonesian urban artists today, in which art making moves beyond ideological esthetic rules, rhetorical expressions, or even mere ‘hobby’. Above all, it becomes a means to communicate and connect in a meaningful way in these fast-paced, transcient times.
